Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged European leaders not to yield to Kremlin demands to halt its invasion of Ukraine, calling concessions “suicidal” for Europe during a summit in Hungary.
Addressing concerns over calls from some leaders to compromise with President Vladimir Putin, Zelensky argued such actions would only embolden Russian aggression.
“There’s talk of giving in to Putin—it’s unacceptable for Ukraine and suicidal for all Europe,” he stated, warning that concessions would encourage further threats. Zelensky criticized certain European leaders for pressuring Ukraine to make concessions, asserting that diplomatic gestures alone are ineffective. “We need weapons, not talks. Hugs with Putin won’t help,” he said, emphasizing the failures of past appeasement.
Zelensky also called on Europe and the U.S. to maintain strong ties following Donald Trump’s recent election win, stressing that “a strong America is what Europe needs, and a strong Europe is what America needs.” Trump has questioned American support for Ukraine and claimed he could end the war quickly if re-elected.
Additionally, Zelensky raised alarms about North Korean involvement in the conflict, alleging Pyongyang’s soldiers are supporting Russian forces and threatening European security. “North Korea is now waging war in Europe,” he said, highlighting the broader implications of the invasion.
The summit, hosted by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, comes amid Orban’s ongoing opposition to Western financial support for Ukraine.
