Ten police officers were killed and seven others wounded during an attack on a check post near the Afghan border, officials reported on Friday.

The assault, claimed by the Pakistan Taliban, targeted a post of the Frontier Constabulary in Dera Ismail Khan district, located in southwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

“The intense exchange of fire lasted for nearly an hour. Ten Frontier Constabulary personnel were martyred, and seven were wounded during the attack,” a senior intelligence officer told AFP on condition of anonymity.

According to officials, approximately 20 to 25 militants launched the heavy assault against the Frontier Constabulary, a force that assists local police in maintaining security. The Pakistan Taliban, also known as Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement released to AFP.

Since the Afghan Taliban’s return to power in 2021, Pakistan has faced a surge in militancy, with the TTP carrying out frequent attacks, mostly targeting security forces. Police personnel have become regular targets of militant violence in this volatile border region.
