Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused Russia of supplying Iran with Shahed drones now being used in attacks against the United States and Israel. Speaking in an interview excerpt aired by CNN, Zelensky said it was “100 percent facts” that Iranian forces had deployed Russian‑made Shaheds to strike US bases.
Shahed drones have been linked to multiple attacks across the Middle East, though their exact manufacturers are not always publicly confirmed. Iran originally pioneered the Shahed a low‑cost, highly destructive alternative to expensive missiles and the drones first gained global attention when Russia began launching them by the thousands during its invasion of Ukraine in late 2022.
While Iran initially provided the drones to Moscow, Russia has since begun producing its own versions. The design has spread far beyond the two countries: several militaries now operate Shahed‑type drones, including the US, which has acknowledged using them in its current campaign against Iran.
The growing use of Shahed drones underscores how rapidly the technology has proliferated and how deeply intertwined the military cooperation between Russia and Iran has become, even as both nations face escalating confrontations with Western powers.
