Debutant spinner Sonal Dinusha and fast bowlers Vishwa Fernando and Asitha Fernando each claimed two wickets to help Sri Lanka limit Bangladesh to 8-220 by the end of the first day of the second Test in Colombo.
Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto won the toss and opted to bat first at the Singhalese Sports Club on Wednesday. However, the visitors faced an early setback, losing their first wicket with just five runs on the board.
Opening batter Anamul Haque missed a chance to settle in after Sri Lankan wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis dropped him off Asitha Fernando, but he was dismissed soon after by the same bowler without scoring.
Mominul Haque and Shadman Islam built a promising partnership of 38 before Sri Lankan captain Dhananjaya de Silva dismissed Mominul, caught by substitute fielder Pawan Rathnayak for 21. This left Bangladesh at 2-71 at lunch.
After the break, Sri Lanka struck quickly. Fernando had Shanto, who scored centuries in each innings of the first Test in Galle, caught behind by Mendis for just eight. Then, off-spinner Tharindu Rathnayake caught Shadman Islam, who made 46—the highest score of the innings—caught by de Silva, leaving Bangladesh at 4-76.
Sri Lanka nearly took another wicket when Lahiru Udara dropped Mushfiqur Rahim in the deep on eight. Rahim and Litton Das then stabilized the innings with a 67-run partnership for the fifth wicket.
Das was caught behind for 34 off Vishwa Fernando, and Rahim, who scored 35, edged a catch to Mendis, giving Dinusha a second wicket. Dinusha finished with figures of 2-22, as Sri Lanka kept Bangladesh on the back foot.
