Continuous heavy rainfall has pushed the Yamuna River in India’s capital, Delhi, above the danger level, triggering widespread flooding in low-lying areas. Relief centres, homes, and major roads have been inundated, disrupting transport and daily life. Authorities have evacuated more than a hundred residents to safer locations and issued a flood alert.
At 7 a.m. on Thursday, water levels at the Old Railway Bridge were recorded at 207.48 metres, surpassing the danger threshold. While levels remained steady overnight, a slight rise was observed in the morning. The downpour on Wednesday afternoon brought severe traffic congestion and waterlogging across Delhi and the National Capital Region, particularly along the riverbanks.
The scale of the damage is evident in incidents such as a road collapse in Alipur, submerged vehicles in Civil Lines, and flooded buildings in the Kashmiri Gate area. Local authorities have confirmed that rescue teams have moved 626 people and 13 livestock to safety as the city braces for further rainfall and potential flooding.
