Since 2018, the United Nations has been observing April 21 as World Creativity and Innovation Day. The day aims to highlight the importance of new ideas and innovative solutions in achieving sustainable development for humanity. Various programs and activities are organized around this date to promote the need for creativity and innovation in addressing global challenges.

Experts believe that creativity and innovation play a crucial role in advancing the modern world. These two qualities are essential for solving complex societal problems effectively and sustainably. Analysts note that there is a surge of innovation on a global scale, and fostering an environment that encourages young people’s inventive skills and creativity is vital for future growth.

Dr. Rashedur Rahman, Executive Director of the Innovation, Creativity, and Entrepreneurship Center at the University of Dhaka, states that Bangladesh’s position in the global innovation index remains relatively low. The main reason, he says, is the lack of research-friendly and creativity-supportive environments.

He emphasizes that nearly 60% of Bangladesh’s population is youth. Engaging this large young demographic in innovative activities can accelerate the country’s progress significantly.

History of World Creativity and Innovation Day

Founded on May 25, 2001, in Toronto, Canada, by Marci Segal, the day was established to promote awareness about the importance of creativity and innovation. Segal, who studied creativity at the International Center for Creativity in 1977, played a key role in advocating for this observance.

On April 27, 2017, the United Nations officially designated April 21 as World Creativity and Innovation Day. The decision was influenced by the recognition that creativity and innovation are vital to human development across all sectors. The title “World Creativity and Innovation Day” was chosen to raise awareness about their critical role in shaping a better future for all.
