Work-from-Home Law Sparks Border Business Backlash

1 min read

A proposed Victorian law granting employees the right to work from home two days a week is stirring strong reactions especially from businesses straddling state lines.

Real estate agent William Bonnici, whose company operates offices in both Victoria and New South Wales, says the move could push him to shut down his Victorian branches. While some of his staff already work remotely, Bonnici argues that mandating flexibility across the board is unrealistic and intrusive.

“When the government starts telling businesses how to operate, it makes you rethink where you’re based,” he said, warning that such legislation could create unfair expectations for workers in hands-on roles like nursing or hospitality.

Bonnici believes laws should protect both sides of the employment equation not tilt the balance. “They should shield employees from bad bosses and employers from slack workers,” he said.

But not everyone sees it as a threat. Accountant Tom Hall welcomes the idea, saying remote work has transformed his family life. “I get more time with my kids and save hours by skipping the commute,” he shared.
