In a notable shift from last year’s controversial decision, supermarket giant Woolworths has announced it will stock Australia Day merchandise for 2025, responding to widespread public outcry.
A spokesperson for Woolworths confirmed the news, stating, “We will be celebrating Australia Day as a team, and with our customers.” This year’s festivities promise to be more than just flags and accessories; the retailer plans extensive advertising and dedicated “Perfect for Australia Day” sections in its supermarkets and Big W stores.
These specially curated sections will feature a variety of themed merchandise, all available online, aiming to enhance the celebration. Acknowledging the backlash from 2024, the spokesperson admitted that the decision to forgo Australia Day merchandise had been a misstep.
“We listened and recognized that many customers and teams wanted us to do more to help them celebrate the day,” the spokesperson explained.
Woolworths plans to embrace the occasion through offerings of great Australian food, suitable for gatherings over the long weekend, while Big W will showcase products designed to bring families and friends together. As Australia Day approaches, Woolworths is set to make a significant comeback in the celebrations.
