Women at Darwin Prison Prepare for Move to New Facility

1 min read

Women held at the Darwin prison have begun preparing to relocate to a new facility, with officials saying the mood among detainees is overwhelmingly positive ahead of Monday’s move. Deputy Corrections Commissioner Kym McKay said the transition had generated strong anticipation among the women.

“Excitement is an understatement,” he said.

McKay noted that planning for medium and high security women’s cells was still in its early stages. Those prisoners will continue to be housed in the block that adjoins the male unit until the design and approval process is completed.

A Department of Corrections spokesperson said the dedicated mums and bubs unit would remain in its current location because it was specifically designed for that purpose. The spokesperson also confirmed that the placement of transgender and gender diverse prisoners is determined individually, based on risk assessments, safety and security needs, and clinical and psychological guidance.
