Authorities are appealing for witnesses following a crash involving a stolen van that was being pursued by Tasmania Police near Hobart on Wednesday. The incident occurred around 2pm on Cambridge Road in Cambridge, when a white Mitsubishi Express van, allegedly stolen, was involved in a collision after a police attempt to intercept it.
Police said the 36-year-old male driver was taken to hospital after the crash, which saw the van roll and collide with another vehicle. The driver was the only occupant of the van. The female driver of the second vehicle, who was the sole occupant, was unharmed.
The pursuit began when police observed the stolen van and activated their lights to stop it. However, police allege the driver evaded officers by driving dangerously before losing control and crashing. Cambridge Road was closed for about four and a half hours while police examined the scene.
A Professional Standards investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash, as is standard procedure in such incidents.
Police are calling for anyone who witnessed the crash or saw a white Mitsubishi Express van being driven around the area at the time to come forward. Eyewitnesses, or those with dash cam footage or additional information, can contact Tasmania Police on 131444, report anonymously via Crime Stoppers at 1800333000, or through the Crime Stoppers website, quoting OR778445.
