A region that should be blanketed in winter snow is instead engulfed in flames. Vast stretches of forest near the Valley of Flowers and Nanda Devi National Park in India’s Uttarakhand are burning uncontrollably, turning one of the Himalayas’ most iconic landscapes into a disaster zone. The situation has become so severe that the Indian Air Force has deployed helicopter support to fight the blaze.
Satellite images now clearly show the fire’s expanding perimeter, underscoring how far the flames have spread. According to officials, the wildfire began in early January and has intensified every day since. Meteorologists and forest authorities say the area received almost no snowfall or rainfall this winter, leaving the land and vegetation dangerously dry. The parched terrain has acted like fuel, allowing the fire to race through remote mountain slopes where containment is extremely difficult.
Recognizing the escalating threat, the Forest Survey of India has already issued more than 1,600 wildfire alerts for Uttarakhand this season.
