Across the country, there’s a growing excitement around satellite-based internet services like Starlink. However, this enthusiasm seems to be coinciding with a decline in mobile internet subscribers. While broadband usage has increased, the number of users relying on mobile internet continues to drop.
According to data from the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), approximately 9.4 million internet subscribers and 13.2 million mobile internet users have declined over the past seven months up to January.
Currently, the total number of internet users in the country, combining both mobile and broadband, stands at 130 million, down from 142.2 million in June. However, the number of broadband internet subscribers has seen a slight increase, reaching around 14 million.
In Bangladesh, around 3,500 Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are offering services, along with three mobile operators and one state-owned operator providing mobile services.
According to Grameenphone’s financial report, the number of active data users in the second quarter of 2024 (April-June) was 49.3 million, which dropped to 48 million in the fourth quarter (October-December).
Additionally, Grameenphone customers have reduced their average spending by 13 Taka. In the fourth quarter of 2023, the average monthly expenditure per customer was 161 Taka, which fell to 148 Taka in the fourth quarter of 2024. Similarly, Robi’s revenue per user has decreased from 147 Taka to 142 Taka.
This situation raises the question: why are customers losing interest in mobile internet? Is this shift driven by technological advancements and changing consumer demands?
