WHO Warns of 15% Jump in Antibiotic-Resistant Infections Worldwide

A World Health Organization report released today reveals antibiotic-resistant infections have risen by 15% globally over the past five years. The surge threatens to undermine decades of progress in treating common bacterial diseases.

The WHO calls for urgent action on antimicrobial stewardship, improved sanitation, and accelerated research into novel drugs. “We face a potential return to the pre-antibiotic era, where simple infections can be deadly,” said WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Low- and middle-income countries bear the brunt of the rise, with resistant strains of tuberculosis and gonorrhea spiking. The agency urges governments to enforce prescription regulations and invest in rapid diagnostic tools.
