According to recent data, the average weekly income for Australians is somewhat less than $2000.
In November 2023, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reported that the average weekly earnings for adults working full-time was $1888.80. According to ABS head of labor statistics Bjorn Jarvis, this is an annual increase of 4.5%, or $81 per week.
The 4.5% annual growth was the highest since May 2013, with the exception of a small uptick in average earnings during the early stages of the COVID-19 outbreak.
“Average earnings growth was supported by increases in both the private sector, which rose by 4.4 per cent, and public sector, up by 4.9 per cent.”
Tasmania ($1670) and South Australia ($1735) had the lowest average weekly ordinary time earnings for full-time workers, while Western Australia ($2108) and the Australian Capital Territory ($2080) had the highest average.
The mining sector continues to pay its workers the highest average salary, with full-time employees earning $2952 per week. The industries in professional, scientific, and technological services ($2223) and information media and telecommunications ($2406) came next.
The lowest paid full-time workers on average were in the accommodation and food services ($1397) and retail trade ($1435) industries.
