Bangladesh’s batting woes in the World Cup continued as they bundled out for yet another sub-par total and later failed to create enough threat with the ball as Pakistan won by seven wickets at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
Abdullah Shafique and Fakhar Zaman added 128 off 22.1 overs and all but took the game away from Bangladesh who simply didn’t have enough runs on the board.
Shafique (68 off 69) hit his fourth fifty-plus score of the tournament in six matches. Fakhar, who returned to the team after battling off-form and injury, blasted 81 off 74 balls. The southpaw hit three fours and seven sixes.
Mohammad Rizwan and Iftikhar Ahmed finished the chase quickly after Fakhar’s fall.
Earlier, Mahmudullah notched up a fifty, and Shakib Al Hasan and Litton Das hit 40s but Shaheen Shah Afridi and Mohammad Wasim shared six wickets between them to limit Bangladesh to 204.
Shaheen, who had been off-color in the first powerplay, got rid of two of Bangladesh’s top three. Haris Rauf, generally not a new-ball bowler, dismissed Mushfiqur Rahim, who was promoted to number four for the first time in the tournament.
