WA Road Toll Reaches Highest Year-to-Date in a Decade as Five Die in Separate Crashes

Five people lost their lives in separate road accidents within 24 hours across Western Australia, pushing the state’s road toll to its highest level this year in ten years. WA Road Safety Commissioner Adrian Warner and WA Police Road Policing Commander Mike Peters both voiced their frustration over the rising fatalities and called on all road users to take greater responsibility.

“It’s incredibly frustrating that we continue to see these sustained levels of deaths on our roads,” Commissioner Warner said. He emphasized that the recent tragedies should serve as a “wake-up call” as the school holiday period begins.

The deadly incidents started Thursday afternoon when a 70-year-old man was killed in Australind, in WA’s Southwest, after his motorcycle collided with a tow truck at an intersection around 3 pm.

Early Friday morning, just before 6 am, a 40-year-old man was killed in Mariginiup, an outer northern suburb of Perth, when his car collided with a truck towing three trailers.

Approximately half an hour later, at around 6:35 am, a pedestrian aged 51 was struck and killed by a vehicle in Mundaring, an eastern Perth suburb.

Later in the morning, in Serpentine southeast of Perth, a male driver died when his 4WD struck a tree and caught fire, highlighting the ongoing dangers on WA roads.

Both authorities urged drivers to remain vigilant and cautious, especially during the busy holiday period, to prevent further tragedies.
