WA Heatwave Pushes Temperatures Beyond What Some Thermometers Can Measure

1 min read

Parts of northern Western Australia are enduring an extreme heatwave so intense that some thermometers are unable to record the full temperature. Severe heatwave conditions are gripping inland Pilbara communities and coastal stretches from Coral Bay to Kalbarri, with maximums expected to remain in the high 40s for the rest of the week.

The Bureau of Meteorology reported temperatures close to 48°C in Marble Bar, but locals say the real heat is even more brutal. Caravan park owner Neil Munro said his recently purchased thermometer maxed out at 50°C and still wasn’t enough.

Munro said the temperature at his property surpassed 50°C, forcing him to rely on an electronic gauge.

“I was very disappointed because it only goes up to 50°C,” he said.
“It hit 50°C yesterday… the electronic one got above 53°C.”

The Pilbara is no stranger to extreme heat, but this week’s conditions are pushing well beyond typical summer extremes, raising concerns for community safety, infrastructure strain and fire risk.
