Western Australia’s Fremantle Traffic Bridge, an 86-year-old structure, will close for up to 12 months from February 1 to be demolished and rebuilt at a cost of $430 million, Deputy Premier Rita Saffioti confirmed.
To ease congestion during the closure, the state government is considering limiting truck movements across the Stirling Bridge during peak hours. Saffioti said she was confident the closure could be contained to one year or possibly less.
The government explained that despite years of strengthening and maintenance, the bridge has deteriorated to the point where complete replacement is necessary. The new bridge, located about 500 metres west of the Stirling Highway bridge, will feature the same number of traffic lanes but wider pedestrian paths and higher clearance for boats.
Transport authorities have warned the closure will have a “severe” impact on Fremantle’s road network, with significant delays expected for motorists crossing the Swan River.
