A 41-year-old man from Victoria has been charged by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) for allegedly making death threats and antisemitic remarks directed at a federal MP. The charges were announced on Tuesday, with the man facing one count of using a carriage service to menace, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison, and one count of threatening to cause serious harm to a Commonwealth Public Official, which has a maximum penalty of seven years.
The accused has been granted bail and is scheduled to appear before Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on June 19. According to the AFP, the man allegedly used social media to contact the Commonwealth MP multiple times between January 7 and February 19, 2025, making threats and antisemitic comments.
On the same day, the AFP executed a search warrant at the man’s home in Officer, a suburb of Melbourne, seizing an electronic device as part of their investigation. This case falls under Special Operation Avalite, launched in December to address antisemitism in Australia.
In a related case, a 33-year-old man from Reservoir, Melbourne, was charged on February 7 for making similar threats against a different federal MP. He allegedly used social media and email to threaten the MP multiple times between January 16 and 18, as well as contacting a Victorian state MP within the same timeframe. This Reservoir man is scheduled to face court in April.
