Victorian Fire Authorities Brace for Dangerous Heat as Destruction Passes 500 Structures

Victorian emergency crews are warning of worsening conditions as hot weather approaches, while they continue battling major fires that have already destroyed or damaged more than 500 structures, including almost 180 homes across the state.

Premier Jacinta Allan has pledged a full investigation into the cause of the fires. She made the announcement in Alexandra, where distressed and frustrated locals gathered seeking answers from authorities.

Fatality Confirmed in Longwood Fire

The fires have claimed the life of cattle farmer Max Hobson, who died in the Longwood fire near Seymour. His body was found roughly 100 metres from his vehicle, underscoring the speed and unpredictability of the blaze.

Harcourt Residents Return to Devastation

Residents have begun escorted returns to Harcourt, where scenes of destruction have left the community stunned. The fire destroyed 47 homes and wiped out the region’s vital coolstore, a major blow to the fruit‑growing district. Stories of narrow escapes and last‑minute evacuations are now emerging.

Authorities Race Against Rising Temperatures

With hotter conditions forecast, fire authorities remain on high alert. Deputy Premier and emergency officials have warned that the coming days could see flare‑ups and renewed danger as crews work around the clock to restore safety and support affected communities.
