The US-Syrian joint military forces have launched a new offensive named “Operation Hokye” targeting the extremist militant group Islamic State (ISIS) in Syria. US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed the start of the operation in a statement on Friday, saying strikes began immediately and are aimed at ISIS fighters, their infrastructure, and weapons depots.
Around 1,000 US troops currently stationed at American bases in Syria are participating in the operation.
Operation Launched After Deadly ISIS Attack
The offensive follows an ISIS assault last week in Palmyra, where gunmen attacked a US–Syrian convoy. The attack killed two US soldiers and their interpreter, and left three others injured.
Syria’s Interior Ministry later revealed that the attacker had previously served in the country’s security forces before defecting to ISIS.
Hegseth said the operation was launched in direct response to that attack. He added that at least 70 ISIS targets were struck on Friday alone. The operation has deployed F‑15 and A‑10 fighter jets, Apache helicopters, and the HIMARS rocket system.
