US nuclear-capable B-52 bombers flew over the Sea of Japan on Wednesday alongside Japanese fighter jets in a striking demonstration of military strength. The move came in response to recent Chinese and Russian drills near Japan and South Korea.
Japan’s defense ministry announced on Thursday that both nations reaffirmed their determination to prevent any unilateral attempt to alter the regional status quo by force. The statement emphasized the readiness of Japan’s Self-Defense Forces and US forces to respond to potential threats.
The mission involved two US B-52 strategic bombers flying with three Japanese F-35 stealth fighters and three F-15 air-superiority jets. It marked the first time the US had asserted its military presence in the area since China launched exercises last week.
This display followed a joint flight of Chinese and Russian strategic bombers over the East China Sea and western Pacific on Tuesday. In addition, Chinese aircraft carrier drills prompted Japan to scramble jets after Tokyo reported that its planes were targeted by radar beams.
