Urgent Evacuations as Bushfire Rages Through Grampians National Park

2 min read

In a dramatic turn of events, Australian authorities have sounded the alarm for residents in dozens of rural communities to evacuate “immediately” as a fierce bushfire continues to ravage Grampians National Park. The inferno, which has been burning for over a week, has consumed a staggering 55,000 hectares (136,000 acres)—approximately one-third of the park—under scorching and windy conditions.

Approximately 600 firefighters are on the front lines, battling the relentless blaze that has so far spared lives and homes. However, the threat remains high, prompting emergency services to issue evacuation orders for more than two dozen small communities, where populations range from just a handful to several hundred.

In addition, residents in other areas have been advised to seek shelter indoors, as conditions outside have become perilous. Luke Hegarty, a spokesman for Victoria’s state control center, highlighted the challenges ahead, stating, “We are reaching a critical part of the day when we see the wind change moving through the western part of the state.” He warned that shifting winds would pose significant complications for firefighting efforts.

In response to the escalating danger, a total fire ban has been implemented across Victoria, prohibiting any outdoor fires. As the situation develops, communities remain on high alert, bracing for the unpredictable nature of the fire’s advance.
