As Bangladesh navigates significant reforms and transitions, UN Secretary-General António Guterres has reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to fostering peace, national dialogue, and healing. Speaking at a joint media briefing with Foreign Adviser Touhid Hossain on Saturday, Guterres assured the Bangladeshi people, “You can count on the UN to be your steadfast partner, working alongside you to help build a sustainable and equitable future for all.”
Before the briefing, Guterres engaged in discussions with members of the Consensus Commission, political parties, youth, and civil society representatives to understand the aspirations of the Bangladeshi populace. He acknowledged the hopes of the people for increased democracy, justice, and prosperity under the leadership of Chief Adviser Yunus, declaring, “This is a pivotal moment for Bangladesh, and the international community must support your efforts toward a just, inclusive, and prosperous future.”
Addressing the Rohingya crisis, Guterres emphasized Bangladesh’s extraordinary generosity in providing sanctuary to refugees. “This humanitarian spirit comes at significant social, environmental, and economic costs, and the world must not take this generosity for granted,” he stated. He called on the international community to shoulder greater responsibility and provide essential financial and political support for both the Rohingya and their host communities.
Warning of an impending humanitarian crisis, Guterres noted that projected cuts in financial assistance could reduce humanitarian resources to just 40% of what is needed in 2025. “This would have terrible consequences, starting with drastic reductions in food rations,” he cautioned. “That would be an unmitigated disaster. People will suffer and people will die.” He urged the international community to take action to prevent such a tragedy.
The UN Secretary-General also expressed his commitment to working with Bangladesh and other stakeholders to find a lasting solution that facilitates the safe, voluntary, dignified, and sustainable return of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar. Reflecting on his recent visit to Cox’s Bazar, he noted, “Ramadan reminds us of the universal values that connect humanity: compassion, empathy, and generosity. Bangladesh exemplifies these values through its commitment to peace, development, and humanitarian relief.”
Guterres paid tribute to Bangladesh’s significant contributions to UN peacekeeping, acknowledging the sacrifices and dedication of Bangladeshi peacekeepers serving in some of the world’s most challenging environments. As Bangladesh embarks on this critical journey, the UN stands ready to support its mission for a brighter future.
