UN Urges India and Pakistan to Exercise Restraint Amid Rising Kashmir Tensions

2 min read

The United Nations has called on India and Pakistan to exercise “maximum restraint” following a deadly attack in Kashmir, which has intensified tensions between the nuclear-armed rivals.

After gunmen killed 26 civilians near Pahalgam, India labeled the incident a “terror attack” and blamed Pakistan, claiming links to cross-border terrorism. Pakistan denied involvement, attributing the attack to a militant group calling itself the Kashmir Resistance.

The UN emphasized the importance of peaceful resolution, urging both countries to prevent further deterioration: “Any issues between Pakistan and India can and should be resolved peacefully through meaningful, mutual engagement.”

In response to the attack, India suspended a key water-sharing treaty, closed the land border with Pakistan, and reduced diplomatic staff. It also revoked visas for Pakistani nationals.

Pakistan retaliated by canceling Indian visas, closing its airspace for Indian flights, and suspending all trade with India, warning that any attempt by India to interfere with water flow would be considered “an act of war.”

Tuesday’s attack marks the deadliest assault in years, targeting civilians in a region embroiled in conflict for over three decades. Both India and Pakistan administer parts of Kashmir, each claiming the entire territory. India attributes militancy to Pakistan-backed terrorism, while Pakistan denies this, with many Kashmiris viewing militants as part of a local independence movement.
