In a decisive move amid escalating conflict, the ten elected members of the United Nations Security Council have called for a vote on a draft resolution demanding an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Gaza. The resolution, scheduled for Wednesday, seeks to halt hostilities and bring urgent relief to a region engulfed in violence.
The draft, a copy of which has been reviewed by Reuters, also calls for the swift release of all hostages held by Hamas and other factions. It underscores the necessity of lifting all restrictions on humanitarian access, insisting that aid must flow freely and safely into Gaza, with the United Nations and other agencies overseeing the distribution on a large scale.
To pass, the resolution requires nine affirmative votes and must avoid vetoes from the five permanent members the United States, Russia, China, Britain, and France. As diplomatic negotiations intensify, the world watches closely, hoping for a unified stance that can bring immediate relief and de-escalation to a deeply troubled region.
