UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasized the urgent need for international support to assist the Rohingya population during his visit to the Balukhali Rohingya camp in Bangladesh on Friday. He assured reporters that the UN would make every effort to secure necessary funding to prevent further suffering among the refugees.
“We cannot allow the international community to forget the Rohingya,” Guterres declared, vowing to advocate strongly for their needs. He highlighted the dire situation faced by the Rohingya, who require support to live in dignity while displaced in Bangladesh.
Guterres acknowledged the Rohingya’s desire to return to Myanmar and stressed the importance of restoring peace and ensuring their rights are respected in their home country.
During his visit, Guterres toured various UN-run facilities, including the IOM’s Rohingya Cultural Memorial Centre in Camp 18, Ukhiya. His trip coincided with a series of programs organized with Chief Adviser Prof. Muhammad Yunus, who greeted him upon arrival at Cox’s Bazar International Airport.
As part of his Ramadan solidarity visit, Guterres planned to break fast with the Rohingya refugees, expressing his commitment to raising awareness of their plight. He stated, “Every Ramadan, I spend time with Muslim communities in difficult circumstances to observe the fast with them and shine a spotlight on their struggles.”
In meetings with Bangladeshi officials, including a bilateral discussion with Dr. Yunus, Guterres addressed mutual interests, particularly the ongoing Rohingya crisis. He is also set to engage with youth and civil society representatives in Dhaka on Saturday, followed by a joint press conference with the Foreign Affairs Adviser.
Guterres is scheduled to depart Bangladesh on Sunday morning, but his visit aims to reinforce the UN’s commitment to supporting the Rohingya and highlighting the generosity of the host communities in Bangladesh.
