Ukraine’s Top Military Commander Vows to Intensify Strikes on Russia as Diplomacy Stalls

2 min read

Ukraine’s chief military leader has declared that Kyiv will escalate its military operations against Russia, emphasizing that the country will not remain on the defensive while Moscow continues its three-year invasion. In remarks made public on Sunday, Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrsky warned that Ukraine would increase the “scale and depth” of its strikes on Russian military targets.

Diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict have largely stalled in recent weeks. The last direct talks between Ukraine and Russia took place nearly three weeks ago, with no subsequent negotiations scheduled. Meanwhile, Russian attacks have continued to cause casualties and damage across Ukraine, including in Kyiv, according to Ukrainian officials.

“We will not just sit in defense,” Syrsky told reporters, including AFP. “Because this brings nothing and eventually leads to the fact that we still retreat, lose people and territories.” He stated that Ukraine’s retaliatory strikes against Russian military infrastructure have been “effective” and will be increased.

Ukraine has carried out multiple strikes on Russian energy and military sites, often targeting facilities hundreds of kilometers behind the front lines. Kyiv insists these actions are a justified response to Russian attacks on Ukrainian civilians and infrastructure.

In a candid assessment, Syrsky acknowledged that Russia holds some advantages, particularly in drone warfare. He pointed out that Russia has developed fiber-optic tethered drones that are difficult to jam, giving Moscow an edge in both the number and range of drone operations.

Additionally, Syrsky claimed that Ukraine still controls 90 square kilometers (about 35 square miles) of territory in Russia’s Kursk region, where Kyiv launched a daring cross-border incursion last August. He described such actions as “pre-emptive,” aimed at countering a potential Russian offensive.
