Ukraine has added a new dimension to its war strategy with the deployment of maritime drone technology. The country’s Security Service (SBU) announced Monday that, for the first time in history, it successfully used small “baby drones” to attack a Russian Kilo-class submarine stationed at the port of Novorossiysk.
According to the SBU, the submarine sustained severe damage in the strike and is now inoperable. The vessel was capable of carrying four Kalibr cruise missiles, which had been used in attacks across Ukraine. Officials said disabling the submarine represents a significant blow to Russia’s offensive capabilities.
The SBU described the operation as not only a strategic military success but also a technological milestone, claiming: “For the first time in world history, a small baby drone has successfully attacked a submarine operating in deep waters.”
Military analysts view the strike as a major advancement in Ukraine’s naval warfare tactics and a troubling signal for Russia. Western defense experts have also hailed Ukraine’s innovation in drone warfare as a potential “game changer.”
