Ukraine, the United States and key European powers are still working to establish a unified position on a potential peace deal that could be presented to Russia. A senior French official said Friday that the effort aims to create a solid foundation for negotiations, one that respects international law and Ukraine’s sovereignty.
“Our goal is to have a common foundation that unites Ukrainians, Americans and Europeans,” the official explained. “It should allow us to make a lasting peace offer that American negotiators can take to the Russians.”
So far, no joint document has been finalized. Talks will continue in the coming days through calls and meetings, though Washington has not set a deadline.
Kyiv faces pressure from the White House to secure a quick peace but has resisted a US-backed plan unveiled last month that many believe favors Moscow. That proposal included Ukraine ceding territory, abandoning its NATO ambitions and limiting the size of its armed forces.
Britain, France and Germany, along with other European partners, have been working intensely to refine the plan. Discussions now focus on territory and possible security guarantees for Ukraine once a peace accord is reached. One option under consideration is a NATO-style Article 5 clause involving Washington, designed to reassure Kyiv in case of future Russian aggression.
European leaders are also grappling with American proposals that touch on sensitive issues for NATO and the EU, including suggestions to fast-track Ukraine’s accession to the bloc.
“The European perspective of Ukraine is clear and realistic,” the French official emphasized. “It is up to Europeans and Ukrainians to decide how to move forward.”
