Ukraine Claims Strike on Russian Air Base as Russia Continues Drone Attacks on Ukraine

2 min read

Ukraine announced on Saturday that it had targeted a Russian air base in a new military strike, while Russia intensified its assault on Ukraine with hundreds of drones overnight, further escalating the ongoing conflict that has lasted over three years.

The Ukrainian military’s General Staff revealed that its forces attacked the Borisoglebsk air base in Russia’s Voronezh region. They described it as the “home base” for Russia’s Su-34, Su-35S, and Su-30SM fighter jets. In a statement on Facebook, the General Staff said they hit a depot containing glide bombs, a training aircraft, and potentially other aircraft.

Russian officials have not yet commented on the Ukrainian attack. Such strikes aim to weaken Russia’s military capabilities and showcase Ukraine’s ability to strike high-value targets within Russian territory. Last month, Ukraine claimed to have destroyed more than 40 Russian planes at various airfields deep inside Russia during a surprise drone attack.

Meanwhile, Russia launched a massive drone assault into Ukraine overnight into Saturday, firing 322 drones and decoys, Ukraine’s air force reported. Of these, 157 drones were shot down, while 135 were likely jammed or lost. The main target was Ukraine’s western Khmelnytskyi region, where Regional Governor Serhii Tyurin said there were no reported injuries or damage.

Russia’s long-range strikes on Ukraine have increased, with waves of drones and missiles hitting Kyiv overnight into Friday. This was the largest aerial assault since the invasion began. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that two people had been killed in the attack, and 26 others wounded.

The renewed escalation followed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s recent call with U.S. President Donald Trump. Zelensky said the conversation was “very important and productive,” focusing on strengthening Ukraine’s air defenses, potential joint weapons production, and broader U.S.-led efforts to end the war.
