Typhoon Batters Vietnam, Leaves Trail of Death and Destruction

Residents of Vietnam’s capital and surrounding provinces endured a terrifying night as a powerful typhoon tore through the region, killing at least eight people before weakening over Laos.

In Nghe An province, where the storm’s center passed around midday, winds dropped to 74 kilometers per hour after reaching 117 km/h at landfall, according to the national weather agency.

Many families spent the night fighting to protect their homes. “I stayed awake the whole night fearing the door would be pulled off by strong winds,” said Ho Van Quynh, a resident of Nghe An. Power outages left entire apartment blocks in darkness as the storm raged.

The worst casualties occurred in the scenic province of Ninh Binh, where six people were killed when strong winds collapsed houses. In Hue, floodwaters swept away one victim, while in Danang another person lost their life. A local official also died in Thanh Hoa province after a tree fell on him while he was returning home from storm preparations.

The storm left widespread damage, destroying homes, flooding streets, and cutting power to hundreds of thousands. Emergency crews are now working to restore essential services and assess the full scale of the devastation.
