Two Australian women cricketers were subjected to harassment while participating in the Women’s ODI World Cup in India. The incident occurred in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, on the evening of October 23.
According to the complaint, the players were walking along Khajrana Road when a man on a motorcycle followed them for some time before inappropriately touching them and fleeing the scene.
Indore police later identified the suspect as Akil Khan. He was arrested shortly after the complaint was filed, with authorities confirming that CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts helped track him down.
The Australian women’s team is currently competing in the ongoing World Cup and is scheduled to face South Africa today (Saturday). Both teams have already secured their places in the semifinals. The incident took place on Thursday evening when the players left their hotel to visit a local café.
The cricketers immediately informed hotel authorities, who then alerted the team’s security officials. Police were contacted soon after, and an investigation was launched without delay.
The case has sparked strong reactions both locally and internationally. Sports analysts and human rights advocates have urged tournament organizers to take stricter measures to ensure the safety of women athletes.
