President Donald Trump has warned that the United States may supply Ukraine with long-range Tomahawk missiles if Russia does not move to settle its war soon, signaling a potential escalation in U.S. pressure on Moscow.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One en route to Israel on Sunday, Trump described the Tomahawk as an “incredible weapon, very offensive weapon,” adding that “Russia does not need that.” He suggested that the possibility of supplying the missiles could be used as leverage to push Moscow toward ending the conflict.
Trump revealed that he had raised the issue earlier in the day during a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, noting that he mentioned the potential transfer of Tomahawks as part of their discussion. “Do they want to have Tomahawks going in that direction? I don’t think so,” Trump said of Russia. He added that the missiles would represent “a new step of aggression.”
The remarks underscore Trump’s willingness to consider expanding U.S. military support for Ukraine, even as he left open the possibility that the weapons may not ultimately be provided. “We may not, but we may do it. I think it’s appropriate to bring up,” he said.
The Tomahawk cruise missile is a long-range, precision-guided weapon capable of striking targets deep inside enemy territory. Its potential deployment to Ukraine would mark a significant escalation, giving Kyiv the ability to target Russian positions far beyond the front lines.
Trump’s comments are likely to draw sharp reactions from Moscow, which has repeatedly warned against Western nations supplying Ukraine with long-range strike capabilities. The Kremlin has previously described such moves as crossing a “red line” that could provoke broader consequences.
The warning comes amid ongoing Russian strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure and continued fighting across multiple fronts. While the U.S. has already provided Ukraine with advanced weapons systems, the Tomahawk would represent a new level of capability and a new test of Russia’s response.
