Trump Vows Executive Order for Nationwide Voter ID, Limits on Mail-In Ballots

2 min read

US President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that he will sign an executive order requiring voter identification for every ballot cast in the country. Posting on his Truth Social platform, Trump declared there would be “no exceptions” to the rule.

Alongside the voter ID mandate, Trump said mail-in voting would be prohibited except for those who are severely ill or members of the military stationed overseas. The move marks his latest push to overhaul voting procedures ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

Trump has repeatedly questioned the integrity of the US electoral system, continuing to claim without evidence that his 2020 loss to Joe Biden was the result of widespread fraud. He and his Republican allies have also alleged, without substantiation, that non-citizens vote in significant numbers an act that is illegal and rarely documented.

For years, Trump has called for the elimination of electronic voting machines, advocating instead for paper ballots and hand counts. Election officials, however, warn that such methods are slower, more expensive, and prone to human error compared to machine tabulation.

Earlier this month, Trump pledged to end the use of both mail-in ballots and voting machines before the 2026 midterms. Yet, because federal elections are managed by individual states, legal experts say it is unclear whether a president has the constitutional authority to impose such sweeping changes unilaterally.
