U.S. President Donald Trump has called on Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro to relinquish power and leave the country, according to reports of a phone conversation between the two leaders last week.
Trump confirmed on Sunday that he had spoken with Maduro, but declined to characterize the call as positive or negative, saying only: “It was just a phone call.” The discussion is believed to have taken place on November 21, though neither government has released full details.
Sources told the Miami Herald that Trump delivered a direct message urging Maduro to step aside. However, Maduro rejected the proposal, making clear he would not surrender power. Reports suggest he indicated willingness to give up political authority but insisted on retaining control of the armed forces, a stance that has further complicated Venezuela’s already fragile political situation.
