Trump Slams Canada Over Opposition to U.S. ‘Golden Dome’ Defense Plan in Greenland

U.S. President Donald Trump sharply criticized Canada on Friday (23 January), accusing the country of undermining a proposed American defense system in Greenland. Writing on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump claimed that Canada is opposing the installation of the U.S.‑backed “Golden Dome,” despite the system being designed to enhance security for both nations.

Trump alleged that instead of supporting a joint defense initiative, Canada has aligned itself with China on trade matters. He went as far as warning that China could “swallow Canada within a year,” criticizing Ottawa for what he described as shortsighted economic decisions.

Tensions between Washington and Ottawa have grown since Trump began his second presidential term. He has repeatedly targeted Canada’s leadership in public remarks. The latest friction follows a new trade agreement between Canada and China, which significantly reduced tariffs on selected imports and exports. Prime Minister Mark Carney finalized the deal during a recent visit to Beijing.

Following the agreement, Trump argued that expanding trade with China puts Canada at risk, noting that the United States remains Canada’s largest trading partner, followed by China. Although relations between Ottawa and Beijing had cooled in recent years, both sides have recently moved to restore commercial ties.

Trump reiterated similar concerns last week at the World Economic Forum, insisting that the proposed Golden Dome in Greenland would naturally benefit Canada by strengthening security across the Arctic region.
