The United States has deployed a large naval fleet toward Iran’s coastline to keep the country under close and continuous surveillance. President Donald Trump confirmed the move while speaking to reporters on his return flight to Washington from Davos. He said the fleet could be used if necessary, although such action is not guaranteed. Trump emphasized that the United States is monitoring every move Iran makes with heightened attention.
Senior US officials said the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and several guided missile destroyers are already on their way to the region. The fleet is expected to reach waters near Iran within the next few days.
A US official noted that advanced air defense systems have been added to the deployment as a precaution, amid concerns that Iran could launch missile strikes on American bases in the Middle East. The fleet is also carrying large quantities of ammunition, missiles, drones and explosives. It began its journey from the Asia Pacific region last week.
Tensions between Washington and Tehran have steadily escalated since Trump began his second presidential term in 2025. The two countries even engaged in direct confrontation last June. When widespread anti government protests erupted in Iran late December, Trump warned that a brutal crackdown could trigger a US military response.
Although that operation did not take place, analysts believe the decision to send a naval fleet could further heighten geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. They warn that the move may complicate an already fragile regional security environment.
