Donald Trump has announced that former Florida attorney general Pam Bondi will be nominated as his U.S. attorney general, following the dramatic withdrawal of his initial pick, Matt Gaetz.
In a statement, Trump expressed confidence in Bondi, stating, “For too long, the partisan Department of Justice has been weaponized against me and other Republicans. Pam will refocus the DOJ on fighting crime and making America safe again.” He praised Bondi as a smart and tough “America First fighter.”
Gaetz, who withdrew amid backlash from both political sides, called Bondi “a stellar selection” and praised her as “a proven litigator and an inspiring leader.” South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham echoed this sentiment, declaring Bondi’s selection a “grand slam” and expressing confidence in her quick confirmation.
Bondi, 59, serves as chair of a legal arm of the America First Policy Institute, a Trump-aligned organization. She has publicly supported Trump’s controversial claims about the 2020 election and has been critical of special counsel Jack Smith’s investigations into Trump’s actions regarding classified documents.
In his endorsement, Trump highlighted Bondi’s extensive experience, noting her nearly 20 years as a prosecutor and her tenure as Florida’s first female attorney general. He commended her efforts to combat drug trafficking and opioid abuse, emphasizing her role on his Opioid and Drug Abuse Commission.
Bondi was also involved in Trump’s first impeachment trial and has faced scrutiny for her past decisions, including declining to join a lawsuit against Trump University shortly after a significant donation to her campaign was made by the Donald Trump Foundation.
As Trump’s administration prepares for potential investigations into political adversaries, Bondi’s nomination is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the direction of the Department of Justice.
