Trump Dismisses Musk’s New Party as “Ridiculous” but Warns of Potential Disruption

Former President Donald Trump dismissed Elon Musk’s recent announcement of a new political party as “ridiculous,” but the move highlights the growing threat that the billionaire entrepreneur could pose to the Republican Party. Musk’s launch of the “America Party” came shortly after Trump signed into law a comprehensive domestic policy bill that Musk has criticized for its projected impact on the national deficit.

While Musk has offered few details about his new party, analysts suggest it could influence upcoming midterm elections by targeting a handful of House and Senate seats. Many Republican candidates supported Trump’s bill despite its fiscal concerns, leaving them vulnerable if Musk’s new venture gains traction.

“Elon Musk’s America Party is a wild card that could shake up the midterms in 2026, especially for Republicans,” said political analyst Matt Shoemaker. “With the party holding only slim majorities in Congress, Republicans should be concerned.”

Musk, who is the world’s wealthiest person, has been teasing the idea of a third party for weeks, polling over 80 percent support among millions of social media respondents. Unlike traditional third parties, Musk’s potential movement could draw on abundant resources and a large base of young, tech-savvy Americans who view him as a maverick and a superstar.

“His brand resonates with disaffected independents and younger voters who might otherwise lean toward Democrats in swing districts,” Shoemaker explained.

With an estimated personal fortune of 405 billion dollars, Musk has already demonstrated his willingness to spend big on politics, donating nearly 280 million dollars to Trump’s 2024 campaign. However, recent efforts to influence Wisconsin politics spending 20 million dollars on a state Supreme Court candidate highlight the limits of wealth and celebrity influence in the political arena.

Building support among voters outside Musk’s Silicon Valley bubble remains a challenge. Once admired by a broad cross-section of Americans, Musk’s popularity has waned since his involvement with the Trump administration. Recent polling shows his net favorability at minus 18.1, compared to minus 6.6 for Trump, indicating a more significant decline.

“While broad generalizations are risky, it’s clear that the Republican base and the MAGA movement are closely intertwined in today’s political landscape,” said Flavio Hickel, a political science professor at Washington College.
