Australian batting star Travis Head is optimistic about Josh Inglis’s future in Test cricket, expressing confidence that Inglis will “excel” with a sustained run in the format. As the tourists gear up for their upcoming series against the West Indies, rain has caused disruptions, leaving the pitch conditions a mystery ahead of the first Test.
Following a disappointing loss to England in the World Test Championship final, Australia faces a quick turnaround with the first West Indies clash scheduled for Wednesday in Bridgetown.
The team has a new look, with Sam Konstas and Inglis replacing the dropped Marnus Labuschagne and injured Steve Smith. Inglis made an impressive debut in Sri Lanka, scoring a century batting at number five. While his exact batting position against the West Indies remains uncertain ranging from number three to six Head says it won’t matter. “He can cover so many bases,” Head said of Inglis, who is part of the rare club of Australians to score centuries across Test, ODI, and T20 formats.
“[He’s had] limited opportunity in a long time being in the squad. It feels like he’s played a lot more than he has for Australia. Once he gets his extended stay in the team, I think he’ll excel. He’s already shown great application in Sri Lanka. He’s been in some tough roles as well… I think he’s well-adapted and ready to go. He’s been waiting for a long time.”
The uncertainty isn’t limited to the batting order; the state of the pitch itself remains a mystery. With no clear analysis of the wicket, the Australian players are preparing for all possible conditions.
“Unknown at the moment, I would like to see one,” Head said when asked about the pitch. “I think we’re prepared for anything, really, and we’re prepared for probably both in the same game.”
