A troubling incident has culminated in the death of a prisoner at the Princess Alexandra Hospital’s psychiatric ward in Brisbane’s south, just two days after a confrontation with another mental health patient. The circumstances surrounding the death are now under close scrutiny as authorities treat it as a death in custody.

The ABC understands that a formal report is underway to be submitted to the coroner, as police investigate the events leading to the man’s passing. Officers from the Corrective Services Investigation Unit are examining the case, having been alerted at approximately 11:20 am on May 4 about the sudden death of a 39-year-old man.

Authorities are exploring whether the death resulted from injuries sustained during the altercation or if a medical incident was involved. Due to the ongoing investigation, a Metro South Health spokesperson declined to provide specific details, emphasizing the importance of allowing the process to unfold without interference.

In a statement expressing sympathy, the health authority acknowledged the profound impact of the incident on the man’s family and loved ones. “We extend our deepest sympathies to the patient’s family, friends and loved ones during this difficult time,” they said.

Queensland’s Premier, David Crisafulli, confirmed he has spoken with Queensland Health Minister Tim Nicholls about the case. “What will happen now is a full and thorough investigation,” he stated, underscoring the seriousness with which authorities are approaching the incident.
