A devastating accident unfolded on the Kalurghat Bridge in Chattogram Thursday night, leaving at least five people dead and five others injured after a Dhaka-bound train collided with a CNG-run auto-rickshaw. The incident highlights the perilous intersection of rail and road traffic in the region and the potential consequences of overlooked signals.
The victims include Dilip Biswas, 43; Sadhana Biswas, 37; Aradhya Biswas, seven; Ashish Mandul, 50; and Durjoy Mandul, 18. The crash occurred around 10:30 pm, when the ‘Parjatak Express’ traveling from Cox’s Bazar reportedly ignored traffic signals as it entered the bridge, striking the auto-rickshaw and subsequently colliding with several other vehicles, including motorcycles.
Eyewitnesses from the area described the chaos that ensued, with many vehicles caught in the aftermath of the impact. Emergency responders from Kalurghat Fire Station arrived swiftly after being alerted around 10:45 pm. Firefighters managed to rescue the victims and transported them to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH), where one body was recovered from beneath the train’s wheels around 12:30 am.
As rescue efforts continued into early Friday morning, officials expressed concern that the death toll could rise. A police officer at CMCH confirmed that one victim was declared dead upon arrival, while the five injured remain in critical condition.
The train, which had left Cox’s Bazar at 7:45 pm and was en route to Chattogram, was traveling along the Boalkhali section of the bridge when the collision occurred. Local authorities and fire service personnel are still engaged in rescue operations, recovering vehicles including a motorcycle, a CNG auto-rickshaw, and a pickup van from the scene.
This tragic incident underscores ongoing safety challenges at busy crossings and the importance of strict adherence to traffic signals to prevent future tragedies.
