In a devastating attack, Ukrainian officials have reported that more than 30 people were killed in a Russian missile strike on the northeastern city of Sumy, which has faced intensified assaults from Moscow’s forces in recent weeks.

The assault occurred around 10:15 AM local time, coinciding with Palm Sunday celebrations, as locals gathered to observe the day. Eyewitness accounts and images shared on official channels depicted a grim scene, with lines of black body bags along the roadside and bodies wrapped in foil blankets amid the debris. Videos captured fire crews battling blazes engulfing burnt-out vehicles and the wreckage of damaged buildings.

Initially, acting mayor Artem Kobzar reported over 20 civilian casualties, but this figure was later updated to at least 32, including two children, as confirmed by the State Emergency Service of Ukraine. In addition, 84 individuals sustained injuries, with 10 of those being children.

“On this bright Palm Sunday, our community has suffered a terrible tragedy,” Mr. Kobzar lamented on social media.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack, stating that initial reports indicated “dozens of dead and wounded civilians.” He expressed outrage, saying, “And this is on a day when people go to church: Palm Sunday… Only bastards can do this.”

This tragic incident underscores the ongoing toll of the conflict as civilians continue to bear the brunt of the violence.
