Tragedy Strikes Border Patrol: Lightning Claims One Life and Injures Four

In a harrowing incident that underscores the perilous nature of border patrols, a lightning strike has claimed the life of a young Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) member and left four others injured during a routine patrol along the Kauniya Char-Khetarchar border in Kurigram. The storm’s fury struck unexpectedly early Thursday morning, turning a day of vigilance into a scene of tragedy.

Riyad Hossain, a 32-year-old soldier from the 35 BGB Battalion’s Darbhanga Border Outpost in Jamalpur, was the unfortunate casualty. His colleagues Md Jasim, 52, Nadim, 28, Shahin, 28, and Ferdous Hossain, a 36-year-old Ansar member were caught in the relentless storm and suffered serious injuries.

According to authorities, the patrol was underway when a sudden and severe lightning storm erupted, striking the team amidst heavy rain. The officers were quickly rushed to nearby hospitals, but tragedy had already struck as Riyad Hossain was declared dead upon arrival at Rowmari Upazila Health Complex.

The injured, in critical condition, were stabilized and transported for further treatment. Two of them were referred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, while the remaining two received immediate care locally.

Police officials and military personnel expressed their condolences, highlighting the unpredictable dangers faced by those tasked with safeguarding borders. The incident serves as a somber reminder of nature’s unpredictable power and the risks faced by those on patrol in remote and vulnerable areas.
