In a heartbreaking incident in New South Wales’ Hunter Valley, six people—including two young children—were struck by a car after the driver allegedly lost control while performing a burnout. The crash occurred just after midnight on Saturday on Bromage Road in Abermain, near Cessnock.
Emergency services rushed to the scene following reports of the collision, where they found a 2003 blue Subaru Liberty AWD sedan had collided with two parked vehicles before hitting a group of onlookers. According to NSW Police Assistant Commissioner David Waddell, the driver, an 18-year-old male, was among those injured and is currently under police guard.
Waddell reported that the driver suffered facial injuries believed to be a result of an attack by bystanders reacting to the crash. He explained, “An 18-year-old male driving has lost control of the car, hitting another vehicle, which then struck a number of onlookers.”
Among the injured were two children, aged eight and ten. The eight-year-old girl sustained the most serious injuries, including a broken leg and possible internal injuries, and remains hospitalized. Two women, aged 25 and 31, were also hospitalized, with the older woman in serious condition due to a head injury. A 24-year-old man is recovering from a fractured leg.
Earlier, a ten-year-old girl and a 25-year-old man were treated for minor injuries and subsequently discharged.
Assistant Commissioner Waddell expressed concern about the presence of young children at the street racing event, emphasizing, “Street racing is dangerous, and to have children out there is inherently dangerous.” He noted that the Crash Investigation Unit would examine various factors, including the number of attendees and whether the driver was alone in the vehicle at the time of the incident.
As the investigation continues, this tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with illegal street racing and the need for increased safety measures at such gatherings.
