In a heartbreaking catastrophe on Brazil’s roads, a fiery bus crash in southeastern Minas Gerais claimed at least 38 lives on Saturday. This incident marks the deadliest highway disaster in Brazil since 2007. The bus, journeying from São Paulo to Vitória da Conquista, collided with a truck and burst into flames, leaving a scene of devastation.
Initial reports suggest the crash occurred around 3:30 am near Lajinha. Conflicting accounts have emerged: some officials suggest a tire blowout caused the driver to lose control, while witness statements indicate a granite block from the truck may have fallen onto the bus. A third vehicle struck the bus from behind, but its passengers survived.
The death toll has steadily risen as emergency crews worked through the day. A local fire department spokesperson explained the difficulty in identifying victims due to the condition of the bodies. Lt. Alonso Vieira Junior of the Minas Gerais fire department highlighted the need for heavy machinery to clear the wreckage and recover more victims.
Among the deceased are the bus driver and at least one child, adding to the immense sorrow of this tragedy. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva expressed profound condolences and offered prayers for the survivors, while the governor of Minas Gerais pledged support for the victims’ families.
The nation is reminded once again of the fragility of life on its roadways, as just weeks earlier, another bus accident in Alagoas resulted in 17 fatalities. As Brazil grieves, the call for improved safety measures on its highways grows louder.
