A major disaster has unfolded off the coast of Yemen, where a boat carrying African migrants and refugees sank, resulting in the deaths of at least 68 individuals. More than 70 others remain missing, according to a report by international news agency Al Jazeera.

The boat sank near the coast of Abyan province, Yemen, with over 150 African migrants aboard desperately fighting for survival at the time. The United Nations Migration Agency confirmed on Sunday that the tragic incident claimed the lives of at least 68 people. Search and rescue operations are ongoing for the missing, who are believed to be over 74.

Abdusattar Esow, the head of the International Organization for Migration’s Yemen branch, stated that the vessel was carrying 154 Ethiopian nationals. He further reported that 12 survivors have been rescued so far. In Khanfar district, 54 bodies have been recovered from the water, while 14 more victims’ bodies were found in another area and taken to hospitals.

The latest updates suggest that rescue efforts continue, but the full extent of the tragedy remains uncertain. The incident highlights the ongoing peril faced by migrants attempting dangerous sea crossings in search of safety and better opportunities elsewhere.
