Two bodies have been recovered from the debris-filled Manuni Khad stream near Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh following a tragic flash flood. The incident is believed to involve 15 to 20 workers who went missing after a sudden cloudburst triggered the floods at a private hydroelectric project site on Wednesday afternoon.
As the monsoon intensified over the region, heavy rains caused mountain streams and rivers to swell dangerously, washing away homes, vehicles, and infrastructure. The Indian Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for heavy rainfall across several districts, warning residents to stay alert.
The missing workers had been staying in temporary shelters at the project site near the stream in Khanyara when a swift surge of water overwhelmed the banks, sweeping away everything in its path.
Videos circulating show torrents of water rushing down the valley, carrying driftwood, tree trunks, and debris. Authorities are still working to identify the bodies recovered. Kangra District Collector Hemraj Bairwa stated, “We’ve asked the project contractor to send us the names of all labourers on site. A rescue team is at work,” adding that the total number of missing persons remains unconfirmed.
