Tragedy at Sea: Eight Migrants Lost Near Samos

1 min read

In a heart-wrenching discovery, Greece’s coast guard has recovered the bodies of eight migrants—six minors and two women—who tragically drowned off the coast of Samos in the Aegean Sea.

Authorities rescued 36 survivors in northern Samos, while three others were extracted from a rocky area. The coast guard launched a search and rescue operation with the aid of aircraft and vessels after being alerted by a non-governmental organization. It’s estimated that around 50 individuals were aboard the ill-fated vessel.

Greece has long been a crucial entry point for migrants from the Middle East, Africa, and Asia, with over a million crossing from Turkiye to its islands during the 2015-2016 crisis. This year alone, approximately 54,000 migrants have arrived in Greece, marking a significant challenge as the country grapples with the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
